Description
The riding centre was opened in 1997 by “Nello” who has had a lifetime passion with horses and achieved notable success as Italian Cross Country Champion in 1996.This was the same year that the area was declared a National Park. The Centre is situated in the small village of Paganelli, 7km from the historic walled town of Norcia. It provides rides for those wanting a gentle walk on horseback for an hour or so, through to those wanting a more demanding trek into the mountains for a day or an overnight stay in tents, a mountain refuge or a comfortable farmhouse.
The surrounding area is woodland of mostly oak, beech and juniper criss-crossed by ancient tracks, many of which date back to Pre-Roman times. These paths were used by mules to transport goods between the local villages, as well as for moving sheep and cattle up to the summer pastures in the mountains. Wild boar and golden eagles are a common sight. The flowers are fantastic in the spring and the autumn colours spectacular. The riding centre provides a warm and friendly welcome with good facilities and horses to match most abilities.
Booking is advised in high season. Local accommodation can be arranged, or a week long custom trip of rides and accommodation and good local food. Travel from Rome is about 2.5 hours by train and bus, or 1 hour from Perugia by bus.
